by Stephanie K.:
I am a 35-yr-old single mother of one son (5-yr-old).
I have been overweight most of my life. My weight has fluctuated as high as 290 - as low as 140 (in high school). Since leaving high school the lowest my weight has been is 180. At 180 I was able to wear size 14 and 16 jeans and feel comfortable. Then I got pregnant and ballooned up to 243 day of delivery. I left the hospital at 190 and continued to lose weight until about 4 months after his birth. Then I got depressed and ballooned up again to about 250. Since I was a mother I did not care how I looked or about how other people perceived my appearance.
This philosophy has been fine to live by as I go up and down and up and down with my weight. Recently my son told me that he liked me fat. I think he meant to say that he loves me the way I am. Problem is I don't love me. I love my personality and my attitude, but my body I hate.
Several of the ladies and a few men where I am employed have opted for the WLS (RNY & BPD). I started questioning them about their doctor and made an appointment to attend one of Dr Maguire's information sessions. That was March 14th. I signed my authorization form for Dr Maguire to send a letter to my Insurance Company (at this time a letter is all that is required by Humana). I received a call on March 31st from the doctor's office advising me they had received approval. My surgery is now scheduled for May 27th, 2003.
I am looking forward to a new quality of life after my surgery. Playing and running with my son and enjoying all of my life with him to the fullest.
I will be adding a picture or two later to this profile and plan to keep this updated as I progress thru my "after-surgery" days.
