My story is the same as many of us. I didn't have a real problem with my weight until after my first husband's first affair - I turned to food for comfort. Growing up, I was never small - but was not more than about 10 pounds overweight until my early 20's. I was on rally all through school and while I was a size 7 or 9, while the others were size 3, 5 or 7 - I was still usually one of the, if not the biggest on the squad. Oh - to be that big again. My wedding dress I wore in my first wedding, was a size 11. I'm heading back to that size now.

After 18 years of yo-yo'ing myself up and down and then WAY up in weight, I was at wit's end. On April 30, 2000, I was surfing around the net trying to find the next thing I could try to lose the weight. I was SO sick and tired of being sick and tired. I knew how it felt to be vivacious, thin and healthy - and I wanted that back - more than anything. I have a toddler and a husband who has always been involved in weight lifting and he had recently started taking Karate. While he loved me just as I was - I didn't. It was time to do something drastic - I needed something magic!

Because I was ignorant to the actual weight loss procedures and their effectiveness, I had always thought I would never try that - it was the easy way out and it would never last - I'd surely gain back all the weight and then some - just like always. Ha! Little did I know. It isn't the easy way out at all. It takes a lot of research, soul searching, and the willingness to make lifestyle changes. I stumbled across the AMOS site and also across Heidi's website, and I became fixated on anything and everything I could get my hands on to research this wonderful possibility. I lived and breathed the WLS research.

I decided that the BPD/DS was the surgery that would be best for me. I liked the fact that there were fewer complications post-op with the procedure, it offered the best quality of life and had the most effective long-term weight loss.

I attended Dr. Maguire's information session on May 12, 2000. My paperwork was submitted for insurance approval with HumanaFreedom Plus Plan PPO and it was approved in June. My switch date - the start of my new life - was scheduled for August 22, 2000.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you might have. You can see my journal on my AMOS profile page.

Life is wonderful - and its only going to get better! Thank you to all the wonderful people on the DS support group - you are priceless!
