by Kjay:

I am a 36-year-old mommy of two. Daughter 5 and son 4. I am married to the best husband/friend on the planet. Unlike many I really wasn't heavy as a kid, though I always thought I was "fat". All of my friends were super skinny and that was always difficult for me to deal with. I went to summer camp at 8 years old and I can vividly remember feeling "different". Although when I look back at photos, I wasn't any different. I guess my body image was just really awful from early on and grew worse and worse with time.

Eventually I grew into the "fat" image I had created in my head. When I met my husband 10 years ago I was wearing a size 12/14. I thought I was huge! Now, I hope and pray that with the miracle of the BPD/DS I get back into a 12/14! My husband and I quit smoking July 3, 1991 and that is when the weight really started to come on. By October 6, 2000 (day of surgery) I had gained 126 lbs. I was wearing a 32 and absolutely hating myself.

Honestly, if not for the love of my husband and children I don't know how much longer I would have made it at this size and I knew it was only going to get worse. Then one day someone I knew through work mentioned she was having WLS. I didn't know what she was talking about and got every detail I could.

I began my research that very day, exactly one year ago! I met with my friend's surgeon and was scheduled for the RNY on July 21st, 2000, and four days prior had to cancel surgery. It’s a long story, but in short the surgeon who was going to operate took a leave of absence and another surgeon that I
had NEVER met or even spoken to THOUGHT he was going to operate on me.

Needless to say, I walked. I was devastated. I cried and cried for days! And then, as miracles will have it... I went back to do more research and found the DS site! Thank God! I found Dr. Daniel Herron in NY and Emailed tons and tons of wonderful people.

I met Dr. Herron on August 18th, and on October 6th he gave me back my life! My surgery was done LAP. and took 6 1/2 hours! My recovery was relatively uneventful, except for my reaction to the Morphine (which I now know I am severely allergic to). It gave me triple vision and severe nausea, and I had a high fever too. But, five days later I went home and was happy to leave the wonderful-NOT nursing staff at Mount Sinai Hospital!

I am 5 1/2 months Post-Op now and feel GREAT! I have lost 78 lbs. and cannot believe all the positive changes. I can RUN after my children, I can squat to talk to them, I can cross my legs, I can breathe easier, my feet and back don't hurt anymore, I FEEL LIKE A NORMAL PERSON! My husband and family have been a huge support in every way possible! I feel like the luckiest person alive! I wake up every single day and am thankful I didn't give up. I am thankful it wasn't just a good dream that I am awakening from, I have to remind myself that it is REAL! I wish there was some way I could thank all of those that went before me and that opened themselves up to every possible question. So many shared so much with me! I am forever grateful!

Weight Loss: (Wish I kept better records, sorry)
3 weeks: -26 lbs.
3 months: -54 lbs.
5 months: -76 lbs.
