I am one of 7 children. All my life I have had weight problems. I continually gained from the time I was young. In 1996 I had a open RNY. The surgery was successful. I had no problems. I lost about 100 pounds. In 2000 I started to gain weight back. I gained a total of 60 pounds of the original 100 I lost. From 2000 to 2004 I thought I did something wrong. I thought I messed up my surgery. I exercised - I dieted - I did everything I could do to loose weight. I would loose 40 pounds and gain it back. I never could eat more then I could eat within a few months of my surgery. I finally went to see my surgeon to see what went wrong. He did a upper GI on me and told me that my RNY looked fine and that my pouch was the size it should be. I was so relieved to find out I did not do something wrong. But, at the same time I felt like all I went through and it did not work for me. After I seen it work for so many other people.
My doctor suggested I have a revision. At first I thought NO WAY....it will not work. Then I found this web site and read so much about Duodenal Switch Surgery. I read about other people who had revisions and they have had great success.
So now here I sit a little more then a week from my surgery date of June 2, 2004. I feel so at peace with my decision. My husband is so supportive. I could never do this without him. I cannot say I have a bad life. I really am blessed to have such a loving family. I have put my trust in the lord with this.
I am not kidding myself. This is a big surgery. They have to reverse my RNY and then do the DS on me. I currently weight 264 pounds I am 5 2'. Everyone keeps asking me "What is your goal". My goal is to be healthy. I would like to loose at least 100 pounds and keep it off. I have already started to eat more protein. I am taking all the vitamins I need to as if I already had the surgery. I am drinking 64 ozs of water per day. Although I still cannot eat all that much. I am limiting my carb intake as much as possible.
Update: February 2006
Wow, how fast time has gone. I now weigh 159 pounds. I don’t regret the revision to the DS one bit. My doctor was the best. He and his staff did a great job. I did have some complications but, nothing too bad. I have more energy and I feel great. Below is a picture my husband took of me in Hawaii two weeks ago. I did things I normally would not have done when I was heavier. I went on an ATV trip into the mountains over 10,000 acres it was great. We went snorkeling and we went on some small hikes. We had such a wonderful time. If you are considering doing this surgery do it! Get the best doctor you can find and enjoy life again. It has made such a huge difference in my life.
