My Journey to Thinness

Ever since I can remember I have always been “chubby”. We came from a family that were told “don’t leave anything on your plate, there are starving children in the world”, so we ate. I really didn’t notice been over weight until my teens in Florida. In 6th grade I weighed 175 pounds. I had a teenage crush on a guy and when I was 17. I became pregnant and hid my pregnancy by gaining a lot of weight to hide it. I gained over 100 pounds which wasn’t go for either of us. Trying to loose it was impossible. All of the females in my family are over weight, good DNA I guess. The males could finish off a buffet in no time and not gain an ounce, we females sniff and gain 5 pounds.

Diet history

I have tried everything diet and fad known to mankind. I did the popcorn, starvation, pills, drinks, Jenny Craig, laxatives, grapefruit, cabbage, and banana, weight watchers and in my teens I got speed from a friend who said it would work. Wrong, I was having non stop munchies. I did loose 20 pounds this year, only because I got pneumonia twice and a bad case of bronchitis back to back. I managed to go from a size 30 pants to a 26 womans. Yaaaaaa for me. I have been trying lately to eat cole slaw and tuna for meals and shy away from the things that put all this weight on me in the first place.

Family History

My sister Suzanne had a DS 3 years ago and lost a lot of weight. We both started paperwork with her doctor, she had to fight for approvals from our insurance company. Mine got upheld due to him being asked to leave his clinic. I sought out another doctor in Oregon even though I was in Alaska still. I made my appointment with her and spent 850.00 to fly down for my intro tests and approvals from her. I flew back home waiting for my date…waiting and waiting…….. Nothing ever arrived from her. I called her and they said she no longer did those types of surgeries. I felt horrible that no one ever called or e-mailed me. I now had to start all over again. I heard through this site that my sisters Doctor was back in practice with another clinic in Salem Oregon. I again sought him out and got my paperwork shipped to him. I did everything via e-mail and once again he got booted out. I tried to get all my paperwork back but it vanished into thin air. I was very angry with him at this point and gave up. I had been played on the DS hold pattern for 3 years now by these doctors. In the meantime all this let downs didn’t help my eating pattern and depression of failures with choices of doctors.

My other sister Regan sought out having the surgery since she too was heavy and cursed with our female fat genes. She had State insurance and was approved right away. She went down to California to Dr. Witgrove in San Diego, who did Carney Wilson’s surgery. She began loosing weight fast like my other sister. I was jealous all over again that she was getting skinny and I wasn’t. She even sent me her “fat clothes” which made me feel even better about myself……not! So with all the success she was having with him, I switched gears fast and found their site on the web and got the paperwork and filled it out fast. Since Dr. W had lost all my other medical tests, I had to start from scratch and re-do everything except for the sleep study, since my insurance would not pay for another one in my lifetime. I heard from my sister that Dr. Witgrove was going to be in Anchorage near my home for a seminar on his clinic and the surgery procedures . I was very impressed by him and his nurse who came up with him. They spent 30 minutes afterward talking with me even though it was well past 10:00 pm by now. I came home and got the rest of my tests done and now I am at the insurance waiting games again. I know my insurance accepts doing the DS and RNY surgeries now. So its just the matter of going through their “hoops”.

I will update this and keep track of my progress hope in future posts. I am going to California for a vacation in mid October and hope to have my surgery then, this will kill two birds with one stone and save me more airfare from here which is very spendy. I will have a lot of family with me and they can help with anything I need afterwards. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I will get before and after pictures on soon in hopes of my future thinness and being in a size 12 again. I want to have this surgery because this year my husband and I adopted three beautiful children we had as foster parents. I now have a 4,5,9 year old to chase after and being over weight, that’s a chore in itself. So my future will be shortened if this weight doesn’t come off, and I will never see them strive to be all they can be.. Wow that sounds like an Army commercial. (lol) keep looking here for future posts and my progress.. you can e-mail me and help me bet this once and for all.. heywood4@gci.net

hugs and best wishes to all, ERIN H.
