My name is Deborah. I am 5’9” 47 years old and weigh 356lbs. My BMI is 54 and I am scheduled for my D/S with Dr. Robert Rabkin in San Francisco, California on Tuesday, November 27, 2001.

To be honest I was so against this surgery when my sister told me she was having it over a year ago. But after watching her get healthy and get her life back, I HAD to reconsider it as a viable alternative to my morbid obesity. I have always been “big” as I am a large woman. My severe morbid obesity did not actually start until about the age of 25. I have no children so pregnancy did not trigger it, and nothing traumatic happened in my life at that time, I just got FAT!!!

I am a very healthy and active woman. My weight does not keep me from doing much, however there are things I will be able to do easier and some things I won’t have to be so afraid of, i.e. chairs with arms, sitting in a booth, rides at Disneyland, airplane seats and rental cars that are way too small. I travel a lot for my job and I am in hotels, airplanes, restaurants and rental cars 80% of the year.

It will be nice to be able to walk and not have to rest while everyone else is ready to go. It will be nice to wear clothes that reflect my personal style rather than what is available to someone who is a size 30. I can’t wait to climb stairs and not be out of breath, to get out of bed in the morning and not have my feet and knees ache from all the weight.

I will keep all posted on my progress. Please keep me in your thoughts.

December 21, 2001 Update:
I had my DS on Tuesday afternoon 11/27/01. Everything went so smoothly. I remember walking into the operating room telling the nurse that I still don't believe it if FINALLY happening. I was back in my room by 5:00 and they had me up walking by 7:00. I don't remember much about pain with the walk (morphine is wonderful) but I do remember my sister and friend Kristina taking pictures of me.

I was released to go home at noon on Thursday 11/29/01 and I have to admit my recover has been physically, very easy. I have had no pain, no nausea, no diarrhea, no gas or lactose intolerance. My only difficulty is getting the protein down as I have no appetite and no food sounds good (that has protien in it that is). I drink one IsoPure Sport Fruit Punch drink each day. I put it in my water bottle and sip it as the day goes along, it provides me with 40g of protein and no sugar. The prescribed pre-natal vitamins from Dr. Rabkin have helped greatly.

I am 23 days post-op and have dropped 31 lbs!!! I feel fantastic, still get a little tired at times, but other than that I am great. I will be returning to work on 1/7 and see Dr. Rabkin on 1/14/02.

More updates to come.... Happy Holidays

2/28/02:

Today I saw Dr. Rabkin for my 3 month post op appointment. The feedback is that I am doing outstanding, everything is perfect and having not one problem to date. I have not had diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, really bad gas, lactose intolerence, etc. and the Dr. says that I am totally losing fat and no lean muscle!!! I am down as of today 81 wonderful pounds since 11/27/02. I am wearing a size 22 pants and my surgery jeans were a size 30!!!!!

Everything just changed at 8 weeks for me. Food tastes good again and I am having an easy time getting in my protein as well as other things. I am FULL of energy and tend to be very hyper most the time. Believe me this is a FIRST for me. The wonderful part is that things that have been neglected for the past 5 years are now being done. Not only am I slimming down, but my whole life is!!!!! I actually look forward to exercising and walking and getting out and moving around!!!
