I am 20 years old and I have been over weight for all of those years that I can remember. I started my research in to weight loss surgery about two years ago but I was discouraged by my mother. In July of this year (2000)I started looking into WLS again, this time I turned to the Internet. I read all I could online, I spent hours reading every page I could. At first I wanted to do RNY, then upon further research I discovered Duodenal Switch. I stared reading every thing they had on DS. I chose DS because of the quality of life for the patients seems to be much better and it lasts longer. On this site I found DR Gagner who is the chief of laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
11/29/2000- Today, I had my first consultation with Dr.Gagner. I met with a nurse, a medical assistant, and well as Dr.Gagner. He was a very nice mild manner person, I took a real liking to him. I felt totally comfortable with him. He gave me a list of four doctors that I would have to see. And off I am on my long journey.
12/5/2000- Today, I had my psychological evaluation at my school counseling center. Every thing went well, and they faxed the letter right over. Things are moving right along.
12/7/2000- Today, I received a call from the office and they scheduled me for surgery on 1/11/2001. Whooo I have a date.
12/18/2000- I had my endoscopy today, it was not a fun experience they gave me a light anesthetic. Then they put a long thick camera down my throat. The whole thing lasted maybe 3 min, but it seemed like forever. The doctor took a biopsy from my stomach to check for infections. Over all it was not that bad.
12/19/2000- I went for my nutritionist appointment to with Nicole Seigel, she is the nutritionist the works with DR. Gagner. She went over the food progression plan from the first day out of surgery to one year post op. She also went over all the supplements that I will be required to take for the rest of my life. She explained the importance of eating the high protein diet. Nicole was nice and she was a pleasure to talk to, the fee was $200 and she takes no insurance but their is a payment plan and you can claim it using a claim form. The $ 200 is for all your vists post op for a year I think.
1/08/2001- I have finally been approved for my surgery on THURSDAY!! I cannot believe it is so soon. I am getting very nervous, but surpassingly calm.
1/9/2001- Today, I went for my pre admission testing. Nothing too major just had to have an EKG, my blood drawn, and a chest X-ray. I also have to speak with an anestgologist and an internist. Overall it was a pain less day. Please pray for me I am getting very nervous, this morning I found you self on the phone crying my eyes out for no reason. I have always been the chubby girl then the fat girl. I have never been small I don't know what I am going to do. I feel like I am killing one person and another one is going to come out. I am just praying and tying to keep calm.
1/16/2001- I came home from the hospital yesterday, I am feeling preety good not too much pain after after meds. I am able to get up and walk around. The only thing that really bothers me is the gas. But other than that I am doing fine.
1/31/2001- I went for my three week post op visit with Dr.Gagner today, he said everything is fine and I am healing well. I have lost 34 pounds and been moved off of the soft foods diet.
2/07/2001- I was weighed again to day and my new total is 43 pounds. I am feeling fine I am eating a wide array of food I even went to Red Lobsters last night.
2/21/2001- I went to my first post op meeting at Mount Sanai. I found it to be very informative the group was lead by the Nutritionist Nicole. She had a lot of information on keeping health and avoiding nutritional deficiencies. I found some of the regulars not to be very receptive, but the pre-op were very nice to us new people very interested in recent progress and how eating was going.
3/24/2001- I am doing well with my eating, and continuing to lose at a good weight. This past week I have been in so much pain I even had to hospitalized but it had nothing to do with the sugery. They kept me in the hospital for 5 days doing tests what they came up with was only that it was unexplained pain. any way I am feeling much better and still eating well.
6/10/2001- Sorry it has been so long since I have up dated my profile. Alot has changed in the last few months. First for the first time since I was 12 I have been able to shop in a regular sized departments. I am now wearing a size 14-16 and some times even a 12 yes a 12. I have also had a birthday I turned 21 and it was a great birthday. I am under 200 pounds and I am loving it, life is great I eat what I want and I still lose weight. This sugery was the best thing I have ever done any way I will update again this time I will not wait so long.
9/12/2001- I am doing fine 8 months out of surgery and I have lost almost to my goal. I am really enjoying life on the lighter side of life. I am now wearing a size 10 or 11, some days I look at my cloths like whose are they. This surgery is truly a miracle.
