January of 2001 I was sent to a specialist because my kidneys were showing signs of spilling protein due to my diabetes. I knew that wasn't good, but didn't know exactly what that meant. I was nervous as I went to my appt with the specialist, he told me that I had no kidney damage currently, but that in 10 years I was facing kidney failure, heart attacks, and a host of other health problems. He was kind, honest and wanted to help me find a way to improve my health. He told me that he usually didn't propose this on the first date, but he would like me to consider weight loss surgery. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I had a gastric stapling done 20 years earlier and it had done little good. I lost 40lbs but put that plus much more back on. I didn't want to go through surgery again, just to have it fail. But I decided that in 20 years, surely they had made some progress and could do surgery with better success.

So I began to research. I spent many hours on the internet. It led me to Dr Maguire and a wonderful support group made up of patients of his. They answered every question I had, and I got to meet them and see first hand just how they handled food and what their day to day lives were like. I knew that the BPD/DS was for me! I didn't have too many problems with my insurance co (Cigna Healthcare of Ohio HMO) At first they said no but when I requested a point by point break down of the criteria they based their denial on, they backed off and approved me. Now here it is 7months later and I've lost 89lbs and am feeling so much better! It was so worth it! I would recommend to anyone researching weight loss surgery, to do their homework and talk to people who have had it done. I look forward to posting many more updates!
