Well, like most, I have been overweight most of my life. It started for me when I was 10 after my dad died. I wasn't a "large" kid before that. I have tried everything to lose weight. I even went to a psychiatrist that said that when I did not "need" the weight anymore it would come off. Well, I don't need it, don't want it and just plain out want to get rid of it forever.... but yet here it is.. still.
I have tried many diets through out my life. But as soon as I would stop taking their pills or buying their food, I would just put the lost weight back on, plus. I am *hopefully* having surgery with Dr. Elariny, in Arilington, VA. He is truly a wonderful man.. I have heard that a lot of people feel that way about their "life changing and life saving" surgeons.
I have researched surgeries for the last two years. I fought with my insurance company for the VG (Sleeve) because they would absolutely NOT approve the DS. After I had exhausted all of my options for appeal, I was to the point that I was ready to just give up. But we figured out a way to have the Sleeve surgery and pay for it, since I had something else that I had to have surgery for I would only have to pay for the Sleeve part of the surgery. Then my husband switched jobs and I am starting all over. Requesting the DS again.
When I went to Dr. E's office, I had pretty much convinced myself that I would have the RNY and just get it done and over with. He knew that I did not REALLY want the RNY and said that the new insurance that I had was more likely to approve the DS than the one I had before. That he had read my letters of appeal and why I wanted the DS and that I had pretty strong reasons for having the DS. So he told me to take a couple of days and think about it. Make sure what I really wanted and let him know. Now, I have a lot of experience with surgeons in the last 6 years because of my son being sick. Quite a few of the surgeons that I have come across in my many weeks in the hospital with him, would have just signed me up for the RNY and that would have been the end of it. Matter of fact, several people that I know that have had WLS, just went to whatever Doctor that their primary care doctor recommended and had whatever surgery they said, even if there would have been something better suited to them and their needs. Dr. E doesn't do that. He did not make my decision for me, he gives you the options available and helps to show you how to chose the surgery that is RIGHT for YOU.
I have my Psych Evaluation on Jan 27th (which I have to have before approval) and then I should know something soon after that.
If you would like to know more about me, my surgeon, see more pictures, read my VERY personal Journal or just browse for recipes... my web address is http://www.angelfire.com/va3/losinit/4good.html.
