Default Post Op Pregnancy

I DO NOT ADVOCATE GETTING PREGNANT BEFORE YOUR SURGEON RECOMMENDS!!!!!!!

However, I have been reading a thread on OH about how the DS carries more risk during pregnancy than the RNY. I wanted to clear a few things up because I know some people here also read the boards there and maybe they could pass it along. I got pregnant at only about 3 months post op. I was extremely lucky that my daughter is perfectly healthy although she was small at birth. She is perfect in every way other than the fact that she is the most active baby I have ever seen and I am exhausted at the end of the day lol. When I was pregnant my OB told me that they have a lot of post op RNYers who were pregnant. These people were all over a year out from their RNYs. Even though I was newly post op and losing huge amounts of weight, the OB said I was much healthier than they were and this is why. My normally functioning stomach allowed me to absorb nutrients from food that they couldn't. My tolerance for all types of food allowed me to get more benefit from eating than their limited diet. The RNY patients suffered from much more vitamion deficiencies because of their inability to eat a "normal" diet. Most of her patients were having to get frequent B-12 injections. Because I was able to eat "normally" I didn't even lose any hair during my pregnancy or at all following my DS. I am not arguing in favor of geting pregnant too early, just pointing out that the DS way of eating and absorbing is actually much healthier during pregnancy than the RNY lifestyle.

Thank you for posting about your experience....I think that OH situation has become a conflict of the truth VS a Troll...lol.

It is good to hear though, that DSers are healthier during pregnancy then RNYers.

Momof2,

I'm glad you had such a good experience. I'm here to heartily agree that WLS patients should not get pregnant before their doctor recommends. I did, and suffered for it. I had to start B12 injections during my pregnancy, developed significant anemia, lost too much weight trying to support my developing daughter, became temporarily deficient in potassium, zinc and calcium (had to beef up the supplements by a LOT to get my numbers back up). I ended up delivering my daughter 2 months early by emergency c-section and am now slowly healing. Fortunately, she's healthy - just tiny. I'm healing as well and will be fine over time. But, I probably would not have had the problems I did if I'd waited until my body was more stabilized.

Lesson learned: listen to your surgeon and follow instructions!!

The DS is the best decision I ever made!!

I got preggo (twice) years after DS and OB's couldn't even tell I had DS. I'm so glad that your babies, Bridg and Momof2, were healthy too. My post DS pregnancies were easier than my Pre-DS ones. I did need IV vitamins and injectable iron, but weight gain was normal and birth weights were over six and over 7 pounds. We were really blessed
